2009 Vaccine Guidelines

Core vaccines:

Parvovirus, Distemper, Adenovirus-2, Parainfluenza

  1. Puppies: 8, 12 and 16 weeks of age, re-vaccinate a year later, then every 3 years.

  2. Unvaccinated adults: 2 vaccines 3-4 weeks apart, re-vaccinate a year later, then every 3 years.

Rabies Vaccine:

  1. Puppies: 20 weeks of age, re-vaccinate a year later, then every 3 years.

  2. Unvaccinated adults: 2 vaccines 12 months apart, then every 3 years.

Bordatella (Kennel Cough):

Annually as required, at least 7 days prior to possible exposure, every 6 months for high-risk animals. Puppies may be vaccinated as early as 3 weeks of age and should be vaccinated a second time 2-4 weeks later.

Lyme disease: Currently not routine, however prevalence in Nova Scotia is increasing. High-risk dogs initially get vaccinated twice 2-4 weeks apart, then annually before tick season.

Leptospirosis: not routine
